Nepal two meters monumental Thangka – depicting the life of Shakyamuni

Shakyamuni Buddha Life Story Thangka — Monumental Format, Nepal

This monumental-format thangka depicts the life story of Shakyamuni Buddha in narrative format, hand-painted on cotton canvas with natural mineral pigments. The composition presents key episodes from the Buddha’s life in a continuous visual narrative, with each scene labeled or clearly distinguishable through iconographic and architectural context. The monumental scale allows multiple scenes to be rendered with substantial detail.

Materials:

• Canvas: Monumental-format cotton with traditional gesso preparation
• Pigments: Natural mineral pigments applied in layered washes; gold leaf on architectural elements and halos
• Mounting: Heavy wooden dowels; wide silk border for structural support

Visual Description:

The composition is organized as a continuous narrative: birth, renunciation, enlightenment, first teaching, and parinirvana scenes are rendered in sequence across the canvas. The monumental scale allows each scene to include multiple figures, architectural settings, and landscape elements with considerable detail.
