Tibetan Thangka of Bodhisattva Mahasthamaprapta in Red

Mahasthamaprapta Thangka

This thangka depicts the bodhisattva Mahasthamaprapta in traditional Tibetan Buddhist iconographic style, hand-painted on cotton canvas with natural mineral pigments and gold leaf. The composition follows the standard iconographic form: Mahasthamaprapta seated on a lotus throne, holding the mudra associated with the stabilization of wisdom, accompanied by standard retinue elements.

Materials:

• Canvas: Cotton with traditional gesso preparation
• Pigments: Natural mineral pigments applied in layered washes; gold leaf on jewelry, halo, and architectural elements
• Mounting: Traditional silk border; wooden dowels for wall hanging

Visual Description:

Mahasthamaprapta appears in the standard seated form with two main arms holding the appropriate attributes, accompanied by additional smaller arms representing the wisdom aspects. The color palette follows traditional iconographic prescriptions for this bodhisattva, with red and gold as primary tones.

Suitable For:

Those interested in bodhisattva imagery, Mahasthamaprapta iconography, or traditional Tibetan Buddhist visual culture.
