How the Bell Is Made
A Tibetan ritual bell is cast in bronze. The alloy is usually five metals: copper, tin, zinc, iron, and lead. Sometimes silver or gold is added for higher-quality bells. The five metals correspond to the five elements and the five Buddha families. The alloy is not chosen for acoustic properties alone, though the acoustic properties of this specific bronze alloy are what give Tibetan bells their distinctive tone. The metal is chosen because it carries meaning. The bell is cast in a single piece. The handle is cast separately and attached. The handle is shaped like a half-vajra, with prongs that descend from the crown of the bell and merge into the grip. The bell and the vajra are not two separate objects. They are one object with two forms. The bell is the vajra inverted. The inner surface of the bell is polished smooth. The outer surface is decorated with a ring of Sanskrit syllables around the rim, a band of lotus petals above them, and a face of the goddess Prajnaparamita at the crown. The decoration is not ornamental. Every element on the bell’s surface corresponds to a specific aspect of the practice that the bell is used for. The bell is a diagram of the path, rendered in bronze. The clapper is a separate piece, hung from a loop inside the bell. It is usually a small metal rod with a rounded tip. When the bell is held in the left hand and moved in a specific circular motion, the clapper strikes the inner wall and produces a sustained tone. The tone is not percussive. It is not a ding. It is a long, complex overtone that continues for several seconds after the initial strike. The overtone is the purpose. The initial strike is only the beginning.What Happens When the Bell Is Struck
A Tibetan bell, correctly struck, produces a fundamental tone and at least three audible overtones. The fundamental is the lowest pitch. The first overtone is a fifth above the fundamental. The second overtone is an octave above the fifth. The third overtone is unpredictable. It varies from bell to bell, depending on the exact composition of the alloy and the thickness of the casting. This unpredictable overtone is what makes each bell unique. Two bells cast from the same batch of metal by the same hand will have different third overtones. The sound fades. This is the entire reason for the bell. The overtone structure changes as the sound decays. The higher overtones fade faster than the fundamental. The timbre of the bell is different at the beginning of the ring than at the end. What you hear in the first second is not what you hear in the fifth second. The bell does not produce a static sound. It produces a process. In Tibetan practice, the bell is struck at the beginning of a meditation session. The practitioner listens to the entire decay. They do not move. They do not begin the recitation. They wait until the last overtone has faded below the threshold of hearing. Only then does the practice begin. The bell is the calibration. The bell alone is a sound with no purpose. Together they are a complete instrument. The hands that hold them are not separate. The right hand holds the vajra. The left hand holds the bell. The practitioner is not choosing between method and wisdom. They are holding both at the same time, in the same body. The vajra does not contradict the bell. The bell does not soften the vajra. You do not need to own a drilbu to understand what the bell is teaching. You need to have heard a sound fade and felt something shift in the silence after. The bell is a lesson in impermanence made audible. Every sound ends. The most beautiful tone ever produced by a bronze casting in a Himalayan workshop will be silent in less than ten seconds. The silence after the bell is not a failure. It is the completion of the bell’s function. The bell was not meant to ring forever. It was meant to ring once, fully, and then stop. The practice is to listen to the whole thing. Not just the strike. Not just the silence. The entire arc from onset to disappearance. Most of what passes through your life arrives and departs in the same shape. A conversation. A season. A relationship. The bell teaches you to notice the arc. The beginning is not the thing.
