The material line on a jewelry page can look precise while leaving the most important questions unanswered. “Tibetan silver” does not tell you the silver content. “Natural crystal” does not say whether a stone has been dyed, heated, stabilized, or assembled. “Bone” does not identify the species or source. “Handmade” describes labor, not material quality. This guide shows how to read those claims without performing unreliable home tests or turning an unknown material into a more expensive one.

Tibetan Jewelry Is Not a Material Standard

Tibetan jewelry can refer to historical jewelry from Tibet, work made within Tibetan and Himalayan communities, contemporary jewelry using related forms and symbols, or mass-produced pieces sold under a broad style name. The phrase does not establish where an individual item was made. Museum collections show the range found in documented objects. A nineteenth-century Tibetan necklace in The Metropolitan Museum of Art is catalogued simply as turquoise, metal, and coral. Other Himalayan jewelry includes gold or gilded silver with coral, pearls, turquoise, lapis lazuli, and other stones. These records tell us which materials appear in particular documented pieces. They do not prove that a modern object with a similar appearance uses the same materials. For a current product, the product specification is the starting point. If it says alloy, treat it as alloy. If it says silver-plated, do not shorten that to silver. If a stone is described only by color, do not upgrade the color into a mineral.

Read the Description in Five Layers

A useful material description answers five separate questions:
  1. What is the object? Bracelet, mala, pendant, Gawu-style case, ring, or decorative bead.
  2. What is each part made from? Main beads, metal spacers, pendant, cord, clasp, coating, and adhesive.
  3. Has the material been treated? Dyed, heated, stabilized, coated, plated, reconstructed, or left unspecified.
  4. How is it assembled? Elastic, knotted cord, wire, chain, glued setting, bezel, hinge, or screw fitting.
  5. What can be documented about its source? Country of manufacture, maker, workshop, age, or no confirmed source.
These layers should not be merged. A bracelet can contain natural agate but still use plated alloy spacers and elastic cord. A pendant can be assembled by hand from factory-made components. A traditional symbol can appear on a modern casting. The object may still be well made. The point is to describe the value that is actually present.

Metal: Composition Comes Before Color

Metal descriptions should name the composition or finish whenever it is known. Silver-colored, gold-colored, antique, and oxidized describe appearance. They are not metal assays.

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver normally refers to an alloy containing 92.5 percent silver, often marked “925.” It can tarnish as the metal reacts with sulfur compounds in the environment. Tarnish is not the same as rust, and it does not by itself prove that a piece is fake. A 925 stamp is useful information, but it is not independent laboratory verification. People with metal sensitivities need more than a color description. Nickel and other metals may appear in base-metal alloys or under plating. A seller should not call a piece hypoallergenic without knowing the relevant components.

Copper, Brass, and Mixed Alloys

Copper has a warm reddish tone. Brass is generally a copper-and-zinc alloy with a more yellow appearance. Both can darken with wear, and copper-containing metals may leave temporary green or dark marks on skin when they react with moisture, salt, lotion, or skin chemistry. That reaction does not automatically mean the piece is unsafe or poorly made, but it matters to the buyer. A product page should distinguish solid copper or brass from copper-colored plating and unspecified alloy. Disclosure matters when it changes care or price. GIA notes that many gem treatments are difficult for an untrained observer to detect. Identification should come from a clear supplier specification or, for a high-value piece, a gemological report—not a scratch, flame, magnet, temperature, or acetone test at home. Quartz and “Crystal” Beads

When documentation is absent, “Dzi-style patterned bead” is more accurate than an archaeological story.

Agate Is Not Jade

Jade is an umbrella term used for jadeite and nephrite, while agate is chalcedony. They can overlap in color and translucency, and many other materials are sold under names containing the word “jade.” GIA also records dyed, bleached, waxed, heated, and polymer-impregnated jade. Color alone cannot separate these materials. If a product is priced on the claim that it contains jadeite or nephrite, the listing should identify which one and state any known treatment. A laboratory report is reasonable for a claim carrying substantial value.

Turquoise, Coral, and Look-Alikes

Turquoise may be untreated, stabilized, dyed, reconstructed, or imitated. Coral may be natural, dyed, reconstructed, or imitated by resin, glass, or stone. Laboratory instruments may be needed to distinguish them. For everyday jewelry, honest wording is more useful than an unsupported prestige claim. “Blue stone, composition not confirmed” is limited information, but it is still better than calling every blue bead turquoise.

Seeds, Wood, Bone, and Horn

Organic materials respond to moisture, oils, heat, and handling differently from stone and metal. Normal aging does not excuse active cracks, unstable fittings, or incorrect material names.

Bodhi and Other Seed Beads

“Bodhi bead” is used across the market for several kinds of plant seeds and nuts. It does not always refer to seed from the sacred fig tree, and a common trade name may not identify the botanical species. Natural pits, lines, and slight differences in size can be expected. Deep cracks extending into the drill hole, crumbling edges, insect damage, or a cord cutting through the bead are practical quality concerns. Unless the species is documented, use the trade name without adding a botanical claim.

Wood

Wood beads vary in density, grain, scent, and oil content. Names such as sandalwood are frequently used loosely, and fragrance can be added during finishing. Scent alone is not proof of species. Keep wooden jewelry away from soaking, perfume, and abrupt humidity changes. A dry cloth is safer than aggressive cleaning. Bone and Horn

If an important detail is unknown, the seller can state that plainly. An incomplete but accurate specification gives the buyer a sounder basis for a decision than a confident guess.
