Where the Red Spots Come From
Strawberry quartz gets its spots from inclusions of hematite. Iron oxide. Rust. The same mineral that makes Mars red and gives blood its color when exposed to air. During the crystal’s growth, the silica solution that forms quartz picked up tiny particles of iron oxide that were floating in the hydrothermal fluid. These particles were trapped inside the growing crystal, suspended in the silicon dioxide lattice the way fruit is suspended in gelatin. The result is a white quartz crystal with red specks distributed through its interior. The specks are not on the surface. They are inside, frozen at different depths, visible through the transparent quartz matrix above them. This is the fundamental difference from dyed quartz. In dyed quartz, the red color pools in the cracks and grain boundaries, concentrated along the fractures the way tea stains the rim of a cup. Under magnification, dyed quartz looks like a road map of red lines. No two specks are at the same focal plane. This is how you tell real from fake. Rotate the stone under a loupe. Rose quartz is pink because the crystal lattice contains trace amounts of titanium, iron, or manganese that absorb certain wavelengths of light and reflect pink. The color is structural. It runs through the entire crystal. A piece of rose quartz broken in half is pink all the way through. Strawberry quartz is white quartz with red inclusions. The base color is not pink. It is clear to milky white. The redness comes from discrete physical particles, not from atomic-level substitutions in the crystal lattice. If you crushed a piece of rose quartz, the resulting powder would be pink. If you crushed a piece of strawberry quartz, the resulting powder would be white with tiny red flecks. The visual difference is immediate once you have held both side by side. Rose quartz is uniform. Monochrome. A single color distributed evenly across the entire stone. Strawberry quartz is heterogeneous. A white background with a constellation of red points at varying depths. Rose quartz looks like a piece of candy. Strawberry quartz looks like a frozen moment inside a crystal growing chamber, which is exactly what it is. This geological difference maps onto a functional difference in how the stones are used. The fake is common because the demand is high and the real material is limited. Strawberry quartz requires a very specific set of geological conditions—a silica-rich hydrothermal solution that also contained suspended hematite particles of the right size and concentration. Too much iron and the crystal grows opaque, a muddy brown instead of a translucent white. Too little iron and the crystal grows clear, indistinguishable from ordinary quartz. The window is narrow. The production is low. Dyed quartz fills the gap. White quartz is soaked in a red dye solution that penetrates the grain boundaries and fracture surfaces. To the unaided eye, it can look convincing. Under a ten-power loupe, the dye reveals itself. Look for color concentration in the cracks. Natural hematite inclusions are randomly distributed throughout the crystal volume. Dyed color follows the lines of weakness. If the red is concentrated along visible fractures and absent from the clear areas between them, the stone is dyed. The hand test works across both. Real quartz, regardless of variety, feels cold to the touch and takes time to warm up. Glass warms within seconds. Resin warms even faster. Press the stone against your inner wrist. The name strawberry quartz is commercial, not geological. Gemologists call it quartz with hematite inclusions. The market calls it strawberry quartz because the visual analogy is too strong to resist. The red specks do look like seeds scattered through translucent white flesh. The metaphor is inaccurate in one direction: a real strawberry is red on the outside with lighter seeds. Strawberry quartz is the inverse. White on the outside with red specks inside. You can think of it another way. It looks like a glass of sparkling water with drops of red dye suspended in it. Or like a winter sky at dawn, pale and cold, with a few distant lights still visible. The specific poetry of the stone depends on the individual piece. Some specimens have dense concentrations of hematite, so many red dots that the base white is almost obscured. Others have a sparse scattering, just a few flecks floating in an otherwise clear crystal. The market prefers the mid-range. Enough specks to justify the name, enough transparency to see the depth. When you bring a piece of real strawberry quartz into natural sunlight and rotate it slowly, the hematite specks shift relative to each other. Specks that are close to the surface move more than specks that are deeper in the crystal. This parallax effect is the definitive proof of authenticity. A flat image cannot show it.
